Pearfect little giveaway

Summer is in full swing here at our Rosemary Beach shop & studio! With the 4th of July just around the corner I’ve been contemplating what to make for our annual block party. My Key Lime Pie? Should I use the blackberries from my mother’s garden back in Georgia and whip up a Paula Dean style Blackberry Cobbler? Or perhaps this is a good time to make my first attempt at Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream? Decisions, decisions.

With all of these recipes milling about in the back of mind I suddenly had a vision of an old, old recipe I grew up on-Southern Pear Salad. This is no gourmet dish, but if you have spent any time around  family style Southern cooking then chances are you know exactly what I’m talking about. These  little pears in our shop are a sweet reminder of those times with family & friends as a little girl without a care in world. At only 5″ tall one would look perfect on your kitchen window sill or maybe as an addition to your favorite grouping somewhere?

  1. What a nice giveaway! That pear would be perfect in my new kitchen!! Humm…have so many it would be a toss up between a lobster roll salad on a fresh soft squishy hot dog bun or the recipe I have had for a long time for key lime pie with the double thick graham cracker crust…both are out of this world and both are things I make sure I eat not once, not twice but several times throughout the summer!

  4. I would vote for the Blackberry Cobbler! You don’t get blackberries every day from your mother’s garden in Georgia!!! I’m a huge fan of cobbler! I make peach cobbler when we have company and is always a big hit! So easy! Gotta get over there and see what’s new!

  5. My favorite Summer Recipe is my mother’s Layered Salad. It’s super easy, can be made ahead of time, and is a crowd pleaser! Basically, fill a bowl with lettuce, spread a layer of Mayo over the lettuce (don’t be shy with it!), then sprinkle peas over the top (they can be frozen if you’re making it ahead of time, they will thaw quickly, or if you’re going to serve immediately, thaw them before adding them), then sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese as the next layer (don’t skimp on this either!), and finally sprinkle cooked and crumbled bacon over the top (again, don’t be shy with it!). Super simple, but it tastes good. Enjoy! Christine

  6. Okay, rereading I see I need to post the recipe!

    Quick Fruit Cobbler
    1 stick of oleo
    1 c. sugar
    3/4 c. milk
    1 c. flour
    1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    pinch of salt
2 cups of fresh fruit of any kind

Melt stick of oleo in 8 x 8 baking dish. Make thin batter in the dish and add fruit. Stir just a few times. Bake in 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes to an hour. Crust will rise to the top. Remove when top is golden brown. It’s really delicious with ice cream or whip topping.

I grew up on this recipe that my Grandmother and my mother used!

  7. Yummy key lime pie! I make a scrumptious one too. But I must say, nothing says summertime like homemade peach ice cream. And I remember pear salads very well…. Haven’t heard about them or seen them since my grandmother passed away… I think we will have some on Sunday with her fried chicken recipe in her honor. Thanks for the reminder.

  8. I have a soft spot for pears because they grow so beautifully in Oregon and I miss eating them! My favorite summer recipe isn’t a recipe at all, actually…I love to put out a great antipasto spread – olives, breads, sun-dried tomatoes, cheese, salamis – so easy, looks great, and tastes even better! 🙂

  9. Pear salad… I’m having flashbacks of many Sunday lunches at my Gramma’s! Sweet memories. One of my new fav summer starters is watermelon salsa. It is a great treat after a day out on the beach!

  10. This perfect little pear reminds me of growing up in East Tennessee and spending time picking pears from my Grandmother’s pear tree. It is truly a symbol of all good things that come along with a southern summer.

My favorite summer recipe below is for Tomato Pie:

    • 4 locally grown and in-season ripe, peeled tomatoes
    • 1 9 inch deep cooked pie crust (found in your freezer section)
    • 1 cup sharp cheddar (grated or shredded)
    • 1 cup mozzarella (grated or shredded)
    • 1 cup Hellman’s Mayonnaise
    • 10 fresh Basil leaves
    • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
    • Salt and Pepper to season

    – Peel tomatoes, slice, season with salt and set aside to drain on paper towels.
    – Mix together cheeses and mayonnaise with fresh ground black pepper ( 1T)
    – Layer tomatoes in pie shell, with basil leaves and green onions on top
    – Spread cheese mixture on top of tomatoes and onions
    – Bake at 350 for 30 minutes until gold and bubbly!

(Great served with fresh arugula salad on the side!)

The cake is simple to make, and oh-so-impressive with the beautiful sugar shards garnish. It is lovely. You can find the recipe here:

  15. My favorite summer recipe is a fruit gratin I got from smitten kitchen. so easy & people RAVE about it. place fresh blueberries and raspberries in an oven proof container (1-2 pkgs of each depending on how many you are feeding). top with sour cream; just enough to cover the top with apx 1/2 inch all around. an inch covering would be fine too, I’m sure. top with brown sugar and place under the broiler until the sugar melts and bubbles. this only takes about 5-8 minutes. watch it closely. serve immediately & enjoy your guest’s reaction!

Maybe tomato sandwiches or BLTs for the picnic!! or Tomaten Salat!!! homemade tomato salsa??….or homemade biscuits, sliced tomatoes, fresh off the grill pork tenderloin sandwiches!!!

One is a cucumber tomato salad and the other is a berry trifle that uses angle food cake, etc. It’s very light and refreshing and just delicious but it’s not good for you at all! LOL!

Love, love, love that little pear! It would be perfect in my country kitchen.
