  1. Hugo Humpworth didn’t start life as a hedgehog. He was a handsome, hale young lad who hemmed high-hung draperies in the hallowed halls of Fishworth Manor (in the hills of Halifax) until one day he let a jeweled passamenterie fall from his perch atop a rickety ladder of unknown origin. It fell into the upswept coiffure of Helga Hinkstap, the domineering decorator with horrible teeth (and worse breath) who managed to get everything wrong all the time but still get paid. She turned her wand upon him (and the worked beautifully, because it was hand-carved mahogany, and from a Baker collection she could never remember the name of). She turned him first into a hedgehog, and when he fell from the ladder and tried to bite her, she turned him into this sad but handsome bottle opener, and placed upon it this legend: The person to open the hundredth bottle with Hugo Humpworth’s hiney shall have a happily ever after (for at least a half hour).
