Random thoughts

Hi all!

Thought 1: I am sitting on the beach going through all the social media outlets on the phone, enjoying the breeze, awaiting the arrival of my friends, more beach chairs, and an afternoon of laughter. Sometimes like the past couple months I forget I should just come down here and sit. Today I am being thankful for living in such a beautiful place.

Thought 2: Our blogging has been few and far between but we still love that you all follow us. We have some fun announcements coming up! So stay around!

Thought 3: you might want to see some photos of what we have been up to lately. (These are random iPhone photos)

(If you follow me in Instagram you will see a few repeat photos) this house is really fun and has a few fun colors in wallpaper but the basic wall colors are white, grey, and black. over the next 2 weeks the final details will come together then we will add the furnishings, art, accessories, etc! This is the fun part! It has been an awesome project and it is a great house that has great clients, architect, landscape architect and last but not least a great contractor…. What more can you ask for?? In this business not much. Anyway back to the photos. Here is our progress. The last 2 photos are of the dining room. You can see the same chandelier appear in each photo. The wallpaper is now going up and it is so much fun!

Southern Living Idea House shaping up

Hey everyone, it’s Doug.  The Farmhouse Renovation Idea House we are designing for Southern Living is really starting to come together.  The house installs mid-May so there’s not much time left!  As the contractors finish up construction on the home, everyone at Tracery has been working to pull together the home’s interiors.

Hannon and I visited Senoia to check in on construction a couple of weeks ago and took these pictures.  I hadn’t been to the house since December (Paige and Anna Kay have been a few times in between) so I was really surprised at how different the house looks!  It’s coming together so fast.  Isn’t that big deep porch great?…and so Southern!  The house is still primed for paint in these pictures, by now it should have received its coat of white paint.  I can’t wait to go back and see that in a few weeks.

Our entire team is working on the Idea House…a project this big that’s coming together this quickly requires a team effort for sure!  From Mountain Brook, Hannon and I have been coordinating a lot of the interior architectural details like plumbing fixtures, door hardware and custom paint finishes.

In Rosemary Beach, Paige, Anna Kay, Bess and Kristina have been coordinating the furniture orders with all of the various sponsors involved with the project; and have been working with our seamstresses and workrooms to get all of the custom drapery for the house fabricated.  A few weeks ago, Paige and I presented our design schemes for the house to the editors of Southern Living, to keep everyone in the loop regarding our vision for the home.  Here are a few of the different schemes we have pulled together for different parts of the house:

The interiors of the home will have a sophisticated palette of neutrals and greys mixed with some stripes and plaids and a few doses of unexpected color.  The home will definitely have a farmhouse feel to it, but in a very updated kind of way.

Now that we’ve ordered all of the major furniture pieces and “new” items for the home, we are all busy scouring vintage shops and antique stores across the South for perfect pieces to complete the home and add some history and character to the interiors.

Hannon and I picked up this collage of vintage school pictures the other day at an antique store in Birmingham.  It will be a fun addition to one of the upstairs bedrooms when we install the home.  We are also excited that to be working with some really great Southern artists such as Mallory Page, Emily Ozier and Courtney Garrett–all will be supplying original artwork for the home that’s really going to be the perfect complement to everything else we’re doing.

We are so excited about this house and can’t wait to show you more soon!  Stay tuned, and in the meantime check out Southern Living’s Idea House page to get more details on the project and to find out how you can see the house for yourself this summer.

progress at the Farmhouse

Hey, it’s Doug.  Things are really moving along at the Farmhouse project Hannon and I are working on here in Birmingham and we wanted to show you some updated photos of the house.

The drive up to the house is so beautiful!  Check out that shiny new galvanized roof.

.

The deep and wide front porch is finally starting to be framed on the front of the house.  I really wish that last little bit of siding would be painted…that yellow primer is driving me crazy!  Eventually crisp black shutters will be installed on all the windows.

.

Inside all the framing is completed and plumbing and wiring is wrapping up.  Soon sheetrock and wood planking will begin to cover the walls.  The view above is in the kitchen looking towards what will be a sunny Breakfast Room overlooking the back yard.  Reclaimed white oak beams will run from side to side in the room.

.

In the adjacent Family Room, big windows and a pair of french doors overlook what will be a screened porch with a stone fireplace.  White painted wood planking and rustic beams will soon appear in this room too.

.

I’m amazed with how the curved front staircase is being built.  A special stair builder is on site creating this intricate element of the interior…the run from the first floor to second floor is almost complete but there’s another flight that will lead to the basement that still has to be built.

There’s Hannon, inspecting some framing upstairs.

.

While the contractors are busy completing the bones of the house, we’ve already started  selecting fixtures and finishes.  Because our clients won’t move to Birmingham until the house is complete, we’ve been emailing and UPS’ing everything we’ve selected to Texas for final approval.

We sent these boards with tile samples out last week.   We’re excited to see these finishes come to life over the next few months!

We’ll keep you posted as the house progresses…it’s going to be beautiful!  Have a great week, everyone!
