Inspiration Home Guest Suite

Sometimes we have the best of intentions to post something here on the blog, and time simply just gets away from us.

Hi friends, it’s Doug.  Back in December when we were posting pictures of the Inspiration Home we completed for Birmingham Home & Garden, we somehow forgot to show you the Guest Suite.  Which was kind of a funny thing, because it was personally one of my favorite spaces in the house!

Better late than never though, today we are finally showing you this last little corner of the house.  The timing is great because the window treatments in the room relate perfectly to the giveaway we are in the midst of with The Curtain Exchange.

Because so much of the house was painted the same neutral shade, we decided the best way to set the feeling of this room apart was to use a distinct wall color–Benjamin Moore’s ‘Ashley Gray’ (#HC-87).  We love this color because it has a lot of depth and warmth but it still tinted with enough gray to keep the mood of the room quiet and neutral.  In certain light this color also takes on just a hint of lavender, which we played up in this setting.

*Tracery Tip–notice one thing we didn’t paint white in the room is the ceiling!  When you have sloping ceilings as in this room, painting the flat part of the ceiling can make the room feel choppy.  We continued the wall color up onto the sloped parts of the walls and then again onto the ceiling to create a cohesive and simple paint scheme.  Much better than big grey triangles jutting into a bright white ceiling!

Against the warm grey walls we layered beautiful ivory linen drapery panels from The Curtain Exchange.  The panels were beautifully tailored and lined and their fullness really made the room feel warm and inviting.  They were also the perfect match to the trim in the room, which is painted Benjamin Moore ‘China White.’

Architect Chris Reebals designed an L-shaped room, divided by an arched opening.  In the far part of the room we placed the bed, cozy in its own alcove.  In the larger part of the space we arranged a sitting area.  The centerpiece of the space was a STUNNING purple and green antique oushak from Paige Albright Orientals.  Wow!  On top of that killer rug we placed a pair of greyish purple wing back chairs–Bernhardt pieces from Birmingham Wholesale Furniture–and a fun blue and purple patterned settee from Alabama Furniture Market.  We painted a Tucker Robbins Spiders Nest Table from our shop white (they are normally black) for some sculptural interest in the center of the sitting area.

The finishing touch to the room of course, is the pair of beautiful silk shaded-light fixtures from Visual Comfort.

These fixtures have a great acrylic diffuser on the bottom that casts a beautiful soft light — perfect for a serene space like this.

Well, was it worth the wait to see this space?  We hope so…promise we will try not to keep you waiting so long next time!

Don’t forget, now through Monday the 14th you can register to win a pair of beautiful silk drapery panels from The Curtain Exchange.  Just visit our Facebook page (and “like” it!) and leave a comment on our wall about where  you would use these panels in your own home.  Then be sure to visit The Curtain Exchange Official Site and The Curtain Exchange Birmingham page and “like” those pages too!  That’s all you have to do and you are entered to win these panels, valued at $700!  Pretty easy!

Party, Elvis, the Ozarks, and Christmas

Hi everyone! Whew…. What a week. Bess and I first went to Missouri for an install. It is pretty in the ozarks this time of year.
Here are a few pics of our trip there…(including the first fire I have ever started that actually worked)

Then on our way out of town we got to fly out with Elvis… Therefore I still have Elvis singing in my head!

Then as Bess went back to the beach I headed to Birmingham. Last night was the sponsor party for the Birmingham Home & Garden Inspiration Home we designed. The house opens to the public tomorrow… Head here to find out more. I took a few I phone shots at the party last night. We wanted to share these with you…

Then we got silly…. This is my Rachel Zoe look. What do you think? I was sick a few weeks back and watched 2 seasons of Rachel and her crew… This is what I would look like if I were channeling her!

Happy Thursday! We have to get ready in a minute for another event tonight. Excited to wear my new outfit I picked up at Anthro while out shopping!
